What are the biggest challenges when delivering a sustainable project?
All projects have varying constraints from site to site, but in our experience one of the biggest challenges facing new build schemes is the conflict between achieving low carbon targets, overheating mitigation, and maintaining adequate internal daylighting levels. Optimisation of the façade and fenestration is imperative, and our sustainability team can carry out all three calculations to ensure the most effective solution is positively balanced for all three sustainable targets. We further appreciate the need to balance all sustainable targets with our clients restricted budgets, and always work collaboratively with the cost consultants on every project to ensure best value is achieved.
When is the ideal time to incorporate sustainability into a scheme?
Regardless of the scheme complexity and the stage you are at it is always important to incorporate sustainability, as early as possible. Early integration of clear sustainability targets within the project brief allows for greater opportunity to cost effectively and successfully achieve them. We can help to find appropriate solutions at all stages within a project.
How can we future proof our approach?
Each strategy needs to be bespoke to align with site specific opportunities and constraints in order to meet national, regional, and local legislation and planning policy. You should wherever possible look to exceed these minimum standards. Working towards emerging policy and incorporating developing trends creates a flexible blueprint that is fit for purpose in the future. Our sustainability team works closely with our employers’ agents to undertake ER reviews for this purpose. We also carry out critical friend reviews on to guide clients on the varying conflicting sustainability requirements on projects.
